5 Simple Ways to Secure Your Smart TV from Hackers
Your television is essentially a giant computer connected to your living room. Make sure it is locked down.
We do not think of our televisions as security risks, but modern Smart TVs are equipped with microphones, cameras, and direct connections to our home networks. If left unsecured, they can become an entry point for malicious actors.
1. Update the Firmware
Just like a PC, Smart TVs have operating systems that require security patches. Go to your TV settings and ensure "Auto-Update" is turned on to patch known vulnerabilities.
2. Disable Automatic Content Recognition (ACR)
ACR is a feature that actively monitors everything you watch (even on cable or DVDs) so the manufacturer can sell your viewing habits to advertisers. Go to your privacy settings and turn off "Viewing Information" or "ACR."
3. Cover the Camera
If your premium TV has a built-in camera for gesture controls or video calls, place a physical piece of tape or a sliding cover over the lens when it is not in use.
4. Use a Guest Network
If your Wi-Fi router supports it, put your Smart TV and other IoT (Internet of Things) devices on a "Guest Network." This isolates the TV so if it gets compromised, the hackers cannot access your main PC or banking data.
